2 Nailed, 1 Failed: what’s behind our new reception sign, and what’s next…

Our new reception sign brings together Today Team, Speedy Courier Services and Elite Logistics UK. It tells a neat story. What it doesn’t show is the deal in between that didn’t make it, which helped us make a better job of the next acquisition.
Two acquisitions, one priority
Speedy joined us in 2023, followed by Elite in 2025. They were different deals, but both were the right fit for Today Team, and in both the priority was the same: a smooth handover for customers.
For an owner who has spent years building client relationships, the question is never just “what’s the price?” It’s “what happens to my customers?”
As we reported in our two-year update on Speedy, those clients settled into Today Team and welcomed the wider service and extra support. With Elite, we put the same care into customer communication and bringing the operation into our systems. Six months in, clients were happy and still with us, and Elite’s previous owners had stepped away to focus on their other business.
Elite has now passed its first anniversary under the Today Team banner. As Jamie Boyd, our Managing Director, put it on LinkedIn: “happy clients, solid numbers and a good platform to build on in year two.”
The deal that didn’t happen
Between Speedy and Elite came an acquisition that went all the way to the final hurdle before falling apart. After months of conversations, numbers, meetings and legal work, it was, in Jamie’s words, “pretty frustrating”.
It was also useful. Jamie is clear that the experience helped us do a much better job of acquiring Elite.
“Like lots of things in life and business, the experience comes right after you need it. Despite acquisition attempt two failing right at the finish line, there was a ton of experience and learning taken from the process we went though and the project plan that we created. This, along with the success of the Speedy deal and integration gave us a great blueprint, to make Elite a success and no doubt any future opportunities we find”
Why start the conversation early
Jamie recently spoke to Courier News about owner-operators approaching retirement without a plan for what comes next. His advice is simple: talk early. Owners who start thinking about succession well ahead of time have more options, and more time to get the basics right, like clear, accurate financial records and a business that doesn’t rely on the founder making every decision.
Speedy and Elite show how that can work in practice: customers looked after, a smooth transition, and the owner free to move on to whatever’s next.
Looking for number three
We’re still on the hunt for acquisition number three and the Today Team hat-trick.
If you own a UK same-day courier business and you’re thinking about what’s next, whether now or further down the line, get in touch for a confidential chat with Jamie. And if you know someone in that position, we’d welcome an introduction.
