Today Team Marks 21 Years in Business as Founder Attends King’s Trust Garden Party
This month marked a proud milestone for Today Team.
Our founder and Managing Director, Jamie Boyd, was invited to attend The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Garden Party at Buckingham Palace Gardens, joining guests from across the UK to celebrate five decades of the charity’s work supporting young people.
The event, held on 14th May, also came at a particularly meaningful time for Jamie and the business, as Today Team celebrates 21 years since it was founded in 2005.
For us, it was more than a special day out. It was a reminder of where the business started, how far it has come, and the values that continue to shape Today Team.
From a £3,000 Loan to a Growing Logistics Business
Today Team began after Jamie’s professional rugby career was cut short by injury.
Having played for Crosfields ARLFC before making the first team at Warrington Wolves, walking away from the sport he loved was a difficult moment. But it also led to a new beginning.
With support from The King’s Trust, Jamie secured a £3,000 loan to lease his first van and start a courier business. As Jamie reflects:
“It doesn’t seem that long ago since I was stood in front of the Trust’s panel in Chester as a 24-year-old lad, asking for a £3,000 loan to lease a van and start a courier business.
Back then, I could never have imagined a future that would see me attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace while celebrating 21 years in business.
Building Today Team from the ground up has given me a sense of purpose and allowed me to create a legacy beyond my playing career, which makes moments like this even more meaningful.”
A Full-Circle Moment at Buckingham Palace
The King’s Trust Garden Party brought together invited guests, ambassadors, supporters and well-known faces to celebrate the charity’s 50th anniversary.
Pavlos, Crown Prince of Greece, joined His Majesty The King on the Palace steps for the British national anthem, marking the start of the event. Guests also included Dame Helen Mirren, Damian Lewis, Myleene Klass, Rob Brydon and Rod Stewart.
His Majesty even took a turn behind the DJ decks alongside Christian St Louis and Idris Elba.
“Walking past the likes of Rob Brydon and Rod Stewart was pretty surreal.
But after a busy period in the business and becoming a dad to a very lively nine-month-old, I especially appreciated the opportunity to relax, have a cup of tea and wander around the Palace gardens.”
For Jamie, the invitation also reflected his continued involvement with The King’s Trust as an ambassador, including public speaking and mentoring young people who are starting businesses of their own.
“Over the years, it’s been really fulfilling to give something back by public speaking and mentoring young people who are starting their own businesses through the Trust.
It’s a brilliant organisation that gives people the confidence and support to take that first step, and I’ll be forever grateful for the help it gave me to take mine.”
Still Growing, Still Moving Forward
Twenty-one years after the first van hit the road, Today Team has grown into a multi-million-pound logistics business headquartered in Risley.
We continue to support businesses across the UK with same day courier services, time-critical logistics and dedicated transport solutions, helping customers keep promises, meet deadlines and respond when plans change.
In recent years, we have also completed two major takeovers, bringing Speedy Courier Services and Elite Logistics into the business through asset-based deals.
Those acquisitions have strengthened our service offering, expanded our customer base and helped us provide continuity for customers of established logistics businesses.
Jamie is now looking for further opportunities:
“There may be other owner-managers out there who are thinking about retirement and want to leave their logistics business in safe, experienced hands that will continue to look after and provide continuity for their customers.
Today Team can be that home for those legacy businesses.
From investing in the latest transport management software to expanding our sales, marketing and operational teams, we are in a strong position for continued growth and on track to turn over £5m by 2028.”
Proud of Our Warrington Roots
Although Today Team has grown significantly, the business remains closely connected to its roots.
Jamie continues to support both of his former rugby clubs through sponsorship initiatives, and the same determination, resilience and team-first attitude that shaped his sporting career still runs through the business today.
The King’s Trust played an important role in helping Jamie take his first step into business. Since being founded by HM King Charles III in 1976, the charity has helped more than 1.3 million young people build brighter futures through training, business start-up support and life skills.
As Today Team celebrates 21 years in business, Jamie’s visit to Buckingham Palace was a proud moment for everyone connected with the company.
It was a chance to look back, but also to look ahead.
From one van and a £3,000 loan to a growing national logistics business, the journey so far has been shaped by hard work, trusted relationships and a commitment to doing things properly.
