Warrington North MP Charlotte Nichols Visits Today Team
Last Friday, Today Team welcomed local MP Charlotte Nichols for a visit to our Warrington HQ. It gave our Managing Director, Jamie Boyd, a chance to share the realities of running a fast-growing same day courier business, and to hear first-hand what life looks like on the other side of public service.
It also gave Jamie a chance to discuss a range of topics with Charlotte, including the pressures, challenges and opportunities facing both SMEs in the region and the wider logistics industry.
Shared pressures, shared responsibilities
One of the first things Charlotte and Jamie spoke about was how demanding their roles can be. Running a busy North West courier operation and serving as a full-time MP might sound worlds apart, but both involve long hours, constant decision-making and high expectations from the people who rely on you.
Jamie said afterwards:
“It was refreshing to compare notes with someone outside our industry but facing the same intensity and responsibility. I thought I was busy, but it gave me a new appreciation for how packed the schedule of an MP really is!”
Talking business, growth and the local economy
The conversation naturally turned to Today Team’s growth, including the recent acquisition of Elite Logistics, and how reliable, time-critical delivery supports businesses across the wider region and nationwide.
For Jamie, it was a chance to highlight the realities of being a local employer in a fast-moving sector that many businesses now depend on.
AI, innovation and the future of work
Another theme that sparked real interest was the rise of AI in the workplace. Particularly in how it’s reshaping industries, changing expectations around productivity and communication, and of course the importance of acknowledging the risks that come with such fast-paced change.
It was a chance to discuss how technology is supporting businesses such as Today Team and the wider logistics industry, but also the importance of preparing for the future, all while keeping people at the heart of operations.
A conversation about people, rights and responsibilities
The topic of day-one workers’ rights came up as well, an area where both business owners and policymakers share an interest.
Jamie offered insight into:
- the importance of clear expectations
- how Today Team maintains a strong workplace culture
- the need for fair, practical frameworks that protect both employees and employers
It wasn’t a policy debate, more a constructive conversation about modern working life, and how good communication and good leadership can shape a positive working environment.
A worthwhile conversation for both sides
Reflecting on the visit, Jamie said:
“It was a pleasure having Charlotte here. I think it’s useful for MPs to gain insight into what running an ambitious logistics business looks like, and equally interesting for me to understand the pressures MPs operate under too.”
The visit highlighted just how important it is for local businesses and local representatives to stay connected, especially as industries evolve and new challenges emerge.
