Today Team’s MD Featured in Startups Magazine
We recently celebrated 20 years of Today Team, recounting the story of how our Managing Director Jamie Boyd started the business thanks to a small loan from the Prince’s Trust (now known as the King’s Trust).
It was therefore a bit of a “full circle” moment for Jamie when he became an official mentor for the organisation, and being able to support aspiring young entrepreneurs who are looking to start their own businesses has been highly rewarding.
In his role with the King’s Trust, he has also regularly given presentations to individuals on the Enterprise Programme. This ‘warts and all’ account of Jamie’s experience includes the highs and lows of his journey, as well as his top tips for budding business people.
As part of our 20th birthday celebrations, Jamie pulled together his top 20 lessons from his time in business – and these were published by Startups magazine – helping founders get on the road to success from day one.
It was a pleasing outcome, as Jamie explains:
“I’ve learnt a fair few lessons the hard way, so it’s a privilege to be able to pass some of that experience on so others hopefully don’t have to.”
You can read the full article covering all 20 tips over on the Startups Magazine website, but we’ll share 3 of our favourites here:
Back Yourself
Setbacks are part and parcel of starting and running a business. These can be caused by things outside of your control, or due to your own mistakes. This doesn’t matter though, as the most important thing is how your respond to these test, and overcome them.
Expect the Unexpected
Thinking that happy days will last forever is a recipe for disaster. Sometimes it pays to ask ‘What if’ questions, and plan accordingly. As a business, Today Team has survived a recession, a global pandemic, and a cost of living crisis. Being able to adapt quickly is important.
Build your Team Culture Together
Your personal and company values may not always be the same, but the important thing is to be clear on what you are looking for when you recruit, and the culture you wish to create. Working with like-minded people makes life, and business, much easier.
All 20 lessons are based on Jamie’s direct experiences while starting and growing Today Team, and many can be applied to businesses of all sizes. They also directly inform Today Team’s values as a business, the services we provide, and the way we deal with colleagues and clients.
