Today Team MD Jamie Boyd Named in BusinessCloud’s Founder 250

Today Team founder and Managing Director Jamie Boyd has been selected for BusinessCloud’s inaugural Founder 250, celebrating founder-led and founder-influenced businesses from across the UK.

The list brings together 250 founders from a wide range of sectors, from transport and manufacturing to technology, retail, energy and professional services.

It includes the people behind some of Britain’s best-known businesses, as well as founders who are building successful and influential companies within their own industries and regions.

For Jamie, the recognition follows a journey that began with a £3,000 loan, one leased van and an unexpected change of direction.

“It’s a real honour to be included in BusinessCloud’s first Founder 250.

There are some huge names and brilliant businesses on the list, so it’s a very proud moment to see Today Team included alongside them.

When I started with one van, I was mainly focused on winning the next job and making sure every customer received the service I’d promised. I certainly wasn’t thinking about where the business might be more than 20 years later.

We’ve come a long way since then, but this recognition belongs to the whole Today Team, our delivery partners and the customers who have supported us over the years.”

Recognising Britain’s founder-led businesses

BusinessCloud’s Founder 250 was created to shine a spotlight on founders who remain closely involved in the businesses they have built.

The six-month project began with a longlist of around 500 names, gathered through nominations, BusinessCloud’s own research and recommendations from the list’s sponsors.

Rather than focusing on turnover or growth figures alone, the selection process considered several factors, including innovation, business growth, investment and bootstrapping, wider impact and contributions to communities or good causes.

The final Founder 250 is not a ranking, with the businesses instead listed alphabetically.

Jamie and Today Team feature in the transport category alongside founders from across the UK.

From professional rugby league to same-day logistics

Jamie founded Today Team in 2005 after a serious knee injury brought his ambitions of a professional rugby league career to an end.

At 24, he received a £3,000 loan from The Prince’s Trust, now The King’s Trust, which allowed him to lease a van and begin building the business.

During the early days, Jamie carried out deliveries personally, learning the logistics industry from the ground up and developing the standards of reliability and customer service that still shape Today Team.

More than two decades later, the original one-man-and-a-van operation has grown into a multi-million-pound nationwide time-critical logistics business.

Today Team now supports organisations throughout the UK with urgent, dedicated and complex same-day deliveries, from individual emergency movements to ongoing logistics support for major national businesses.

The company has also expanded through acquisition, while continuing to invest in its team, technology and service capabilities.

Supporting aspiring founders

Jamie’s involvement with The King’s Trust has also brought his story full circle.

Having received support from the organisation when starting Today Team, he later returned as a volunteer business mentor, helping young people who are beginning their own entrepreneurial journeys.

He has also shared the lessons learned during more than 20 years in business through talks and mentoring sessions aimed at helping other founders navigate the realities of starting and growing a company.

Jamie added:

“Nobody builds a business entirely on their own.

I’ve had plenty of support, advice and encouragement along the way, and I’ve also learned a fair few lessons the hard way.

Being able to pass some of that experience on to other people starting out is something I’m very proud to do.”
