8 After 8 – Jamie Boyd Reflects on Acquisition of Elite Logistics
It’s now eight weeks since we completed our latest acquisition, bringing Elite Logistics, another respected same-day courier business, into Today Team’s operations.
As anyone who’s been through the process knows, the weeks after a deal completes can be every bit as important as the deal itself. They’re where the reality of integration, communication, and culture all come together – both for internal operations and external relations with clients.
We’ve spoken to our Managing Director, Jamie Boyd, getting his reflections after the first eight weeks and how things have gone – the challenges faced, lessons learned, and what’s next.
1. Firstly, what made you say yes to this particular deal?
“From the outset, there was a clear alignment of values; reliable service, strong client relationships, and a pride in doing the job well. The numbers were important, of course, but the real decision came down to fit. We could see that what the founders of Elite Logistics had built would complement our operation and strengthen our position in key areas.”
2. How did the first few weeks go once the deal was completed?
“Busy, as you’d expect, but positive. The focus was on making sure clients felt supported and it was business as usual. I consciously made the decision to look after things personally 7 days a week, for the first 3 weeks, as our ‘project lead’ and focussed on stability, communication, and small wins that built confidence. I learned lots about Elite’s client base as I went, meaning we were ready to integrate the business into our day-to-day operation once I handed over to our team.”
3. What surprised you the most during the handover period?
“Even with careful planning, there are always small surprises, little quirks in systems, processes, and habits. There was a little ‘fun’ with some of the technical parts of things, but it was all handled in the background and didn’t affect service levels.”
4. How did the team and clients respond to the change?
“Better than expected, to be honest. The key was communication. We spoke directly with key clients early on, shared our plans, and reassured them of our plan – that service quality wouldn’t just be maintained, it would improve. Internally, we were open and honest with the team from day one, then worked on the handover from me to them, with me still supporting in the background, if needed.”
5. What has been your biggest challenge so far, and how did you tackle it?
“Bringing two sets of systems and processes together while keeping day-to-day service seamless is never easy. We tackled it by prioritising integration that made life easier for both clients and staff, not just what looked efficient on paper. The goal was a seamless transition and I think we did well with that, with some positive comments from the new clients we’re now looking after.”
6. What advice would you give to another owner considering selling?
“Start thinking early about what a good home for your business looks like. Beyond price, consider culture, reputation, and how your clients and team will be treated. When you find a buyer who genuinely cares about those things, the deal becomes more of a partnership than a transaction.”
7. What’s next for Elite Logistics now it is under your wing?
“We’re already seeing opportunities to strengthen relationships with new clients and introduce improvements in services where it makes sense. The plan is steady integration, keeping the best of what made the business successful, while adding Today Team’s support, systems, and the same passion for delivering on our promises for the last 20 years. Following that, a full review of the marketing and some further investment there.”
8. Would you look to acquire a business again?
“Yes, absolutely. This is our second acquisition since 2023 – it’s been a great learning period and a new challenge for me, as I’ve done pretty much every job you can imagine in the business since my career started as a van driver in 2005. I’ve learned a lot from this process and I’m open to conversations with other owners who might be thinking about their next chapter.”
Elite Logistics powered by Today Team
Eight weeks in, this acquisition has reinforced one thing above all: good businesses are built on good people. Whether it’s clients, team members, or sellers — trust and relationships make the difference.
